Class Tonight, Dspace

I'm glad that I was able to make it to class tonight. I have never heard of Dspace before but it seems like a great idea. I'm most interested in it as a means to cut journal publishers out of the cycle of scholarly publishing. I don't have anything against publishers but I am bothered by the increasing costs of these publications and the effect it is having on libraries. I don't really understand how it can be fair that scholars work on and publish papers. Then the libraries at the institutions the scholars are affiliated with have to buy the journals these articles are published in, sometimes at outrageous costs, in order to make them available to the student and research community. It seems to me that Dspace would be a way around this? Maybe? I could be completely wrong and there could be all kinds of copywrite law that wouldn't allow this.
I am looking forward to playing around with Dspace and learning about how to create collections. I'm still a little fuzzy about what the point of the metadata field that we are to email to Larry is but hopefully it will all become more clear as I go along. If not, I'm sure one of my fellow students can help.
